Job Summary

We are seeking an accomplished Chief Technical Officer (CTO) to lead the technical strategy, operations, and performance of one of the largest power generation companies in Africa. The CTO will be responsible for the overall technical direction of gas turbine operations, performance optimization, and team leadership across multiple functional units. This role requires strong expertise in gas turbine technology (GE and Siemens preferred), plant maintenance, digital integration, and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities
  • Strategic and Financial Oversight
  • Develop and manage the technical operating expenditure (OPEX) budget.
  • Focus on maximizing gas turbine efficiency and minimizing lifecycle costs.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities through system optimization and performance improvements.
  • Gas Turbine Operations and Optimization
  • Oversee all aspects of gas turbine operations including combustion systems, compressors, and turbines.
  • Monitor and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) such as heat rate, fuel efficiency, turbine inlet temperature, and exhaust gas temperature.
  • Streamline start-up, load-following, and shutdown procedures to enhance reliability and reduce wear and tear.
  • Maintenance and Reliability Engineering
  • Lead preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance strategies for gas turbines and related systems (lubrication, cooling, fuel).
  • Conduct root cause analyses for turbine trips, faults, and underperformance.
  • Ensure strict adherence to OEM guidelines during inspections and overhauls (e.g., borescope inspections, hot gas path inspections).
  • Safety and Regulatory Compliance
  • Design and enforce safety protocols for high-pressure and high-temperature turbine systems.
  • Guarantee compliance with local and international environmental regulations, emissions standards, and grid codes.
  • Monitoring and Control Systems
  • Manage and utilize Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and SCADA for real-time monitoring and performance diagnostics.
  • Lead the integration of advanced digital tools (AI diagnostics, digital twins) to boost turbine and plant efficiency.
  • Team Leadership and Development
  • Supervise, mentor, and motivate technical teams including engineers, technicians, and contractors.
  • Build a culture of technical excellence, innovation, safety, and continuous learning.
  • Reporting and Communication
  • Prepare regular reports and presentations on turbine operations, performance metrics, and maintenance activities.
  • Maintain clear communication with senior executives, OEMs, regulatory agencies, and key stakeholders.
  • Data Privacy & Protection
  • Implement data protection policies and ensure compliance with NDPR and other applicable data privacy regulations.
  • Promote data security best practices in technical operations and monitoring systems.
     


Requirements
  • Minimum of a First Degree in Engineering (preferably Electrical, Mechanical, or Power Systems Engineering).
  • Strong knowledge of GE and Siemens Gas Turbine systems is highly desirable.
  • Relevant professional certifications (e.g., PMP, COREN, ASME) are mandatory.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in the power sector, with at least 10 years in senior leadership roles within a power generation company.
  • Demonstrated expertise in gas turbine maintenance, operations, and performance optimization.
  • Proficiency in digital monitoring systems, control systems (DCS/SCADA), and modern plant management tools.
